Introduction:
Imperial Examination System was a testing mechanism originally established for screening those who aim for civil service in ancient China. The system, lasting for 1,300 years from Sui to Xing Dynasty, leaves a profound impact on the Chinese culture. On one hand, it is a Confucius-base political system which grows deeply- rooted in the Confucius philosophy. On the other hand, it generates great impact on the ancient education where the social fairness was upheld and social development was stabilized.
The Imperial Examination System first introduced to Taiwan was aimed for cultivating a great number of the elites which also lay the groundwork of Taiwanese Confucius Culture. During the Xing Dynasty, 33 Jinshis passed the exam and have been very influential in the societal and cultural development.
The exhibition is launched to raise the youth awareness of the Imperial Examination System in Taiwan, as of its establishment and development, and to raise the elites’ understanding of the significance of Taiwanese history/culture impacting on contemporary society. The artifacts of the exhibition demonstrate a close tie with Taiwanese social and human development and showcase both historical and academia value. It is considered a rare exhibit at the collegial level where rubbings (from the stone tablets), winners’ roster, and Jinshi Directory are displayed for the visitors to have a close-up appreciation and to develop a deeper understanding of the history.
